Classroom Structure:
Reading Circle Rug: This reading area will be available for students to read a book during independent reading time or free time. There will be bean bags so that they can sit comfortably while reading. This space will be a quiet area which is set away from the other resources in the room creating its own space so that students are less likely to be distracted and can focus on their reading.
Kidney Table: The kidney table will be used for teacher instruction with small groups or individual students. This is set off in the corner so that it is quiet and has less distractions so that the groups are able to work productively.
Square Rugs: This area is not just for whole class instruction, but can be used also for read-alouds and Morning Meeting time. It provides a designated place where all students can gather together and is an alternative to desks to switch things up. However, if students prefer sitting in chairs rather then the rug they will be welcomed to bring a desk chair over and sit on the outside of the rug.
Computer Area: I hope to have at least a few computers in my future classroom for student access. These resources can be used during free time or when completing research projects as well. The in class access provides a smooth transition from one activity to another.
SMARTBoard: The SMARTBoard is used in a variety of classroom instruction. The SMARTBoard can be used in many different ways: to display information, to use with review, to create activities, etc. Having this interactive technology in my classroom will benefit the students as they will be highly engaged.
Student Seating: In my class room, I will have all students set up so that every single student is facing the board. When students have to turn around constantly it create distracts and can cause confusion. I would have my students set up in groups instead of individual desks so that students have a group to collaborate with and you can easily have small work activities because students are already in a group. With any desk arrangement it is best to have flow between tables so it is easy to move around them.
Teacher Desk: The teacher desk will not only be used or touched by teachers. Students will be free to use the materials on the teachers desk as long as they are being responsible with them. In order for students to feel that their classroom is theirs they need to have access to most everything and know that they are responsible enough to handle it.
Storage: One of the storage spaces in the classroom will be utilized for extra materials, snacks, etc. Students will also be welcomed to use what is in these spaces if necessary. Another one of the storage spaces will be used for storing backpacks and coats throughout the day. Hangers will be installed so that each student has their own, keeping it organized.
